Up to 1.5 m. Olive-brown pit viper endemic to Saint Lucia — the island's only venomous reptile and one of just three viper species unique to the Caribbean islands.
Hemotoxic venom causes swelling, tissue damage, bleeding. About 20-30 bites occur on the island per year. Endangered — its range has contracted to the island's wilder regions.
Endemic to Saint Lucia — wet rainforests, dry forests, and agricultural areas of the 616 km² island.
Mostly terrestrial but can climb. Nocturnal ambush hunter of rodents. Gives birth to up to 60 live young. Heat-sensing pits detect warm-blooded prey.
